TREKKING TRAILS NEAR RAKSHA RETREAT

From Raksha Retreat there are quite a few trekking trails, one could choose depending upon time and physical fitness:

1. Trail to Sattal – Total distance around 5 kms and takes one hours and 30 minutes. This is a beautiful ridge from where one can see Sattal lakes and Bhimtal lake simultaneously. This is a good spot to take pictures. One has to walk to the entrance gate of society and take a left, walk 200 mtrs till Soni’s shop and take the trail going right. This trail is taking you to the feature behind Raksha Retreat. As you start ascending you will hit a Y trail, one going to left and one further up. Please take the right trail going up. Continue walking for 10 minutes and turn right to the ridge.

You can see the destination from here that is Sattal YMCA camp. From the ridge you will start rolling down by taking left while facing the lake and then as you go down the ridge take right and continue following the trail. After 15 minutes you will see a trail going down on the right where you will see a large tree fallen on the trail. You will have to go over the tree and continue following the trail.

After around 20 minutes you will hit a flat ground which is part of the jungle camp from where you will take a right and go down to the lake, just before the lake take the trail going up along th left side of the lake and then you will reach the lake shopping area wherein you can have refreshments, go for boating. From here you may take a Cab to Raksha Retreat which you will get from local shopkeepers who charge around Rs 200/-.

It is very relaxing the picturesque trek.

2. Trail to Garud Taal – Total distance around 3 Kms and takes around one hour. This is a beautiful ridge from where one can see Sattal lakes and Bhimtal lake simultaneously. This is a good spot to take pictures. One has to walk to the entrance gate of society and take a left, walk 200 mtrs till Soni’s shop and take the trail going right. This trail is taking you to the feature behind Raksha Retreat. As you start ascending you will hit a Y trail, one going to left and one further up. Please take the right trail going up. Continue walking for 10 minutes and turn right to the ridge.

From the ridge you will see a trail going down on the right. Just keep following that trail which will lead you to the cemetery of St John from where you can see Garud Taal. Take the road going down to the left which will take you to a living area of the Christian Missionary from where take a full right trail which would lead you to the Taal. After that take the left trail which will lead you to the Sattal Road from where Raksha Retreat would be 3 kms by road. One can always call the car in advance at that site.

3. Trail to Mountain Club – Total distance around 1 km takes around 20 minutes. One has to walk to the entrance gate of society and take a left, walk 200 mtrs till Soni’s shop and take the trail going right. As you start ascending you will hit a Y trail, one going to left and one further up. Please take the left trail which will take you to butter fly museum in 10 minutes. From there you may follow the signage. Mountain club to have snacks like Pakoras and masala tea etc. Food is awesome.

4. Trail to Cell towers – Total Distance 5 kms and takes around one hour and 45 minutes. This is a tough trek. This is a beautiful ridge from where one can see Sattal lakes and Bhimtal lake simultaneously. This is a good spot to take pictures. One has to walk to the entrance gate of society and take a left, walk 200 mtrs till Soni’s shop and take the trail going right. This trail is taking you to the feature behind Raksha Retreat. As you start ascending you will hit a Y trail, one going to left and one further up. Please take the right trail going up. Continue walking for 10 minutes and turn right to the ridge. From the ridge take a left towards lake side, as you go down the ridge just in about 15 mtrs you will see a trail going down towards right and one small trail going up the feature in front. Take the trail going up right in front and follow the hill. You will cross three peaks one after another and then you will see a huge cell tower, reaching there you get a 270 degree view and it is a scenic view from there. While coming time taken is 45 minutes.

5. Trail to feature on the West of Raksha Retreat ( Please see the picture below) – This is the toughest of all the treks though may look simple. One has to take a right from Security gate towards Dhup Chaud and from Dhup Chaud start walking down on Sattal Road. After walking around 700 mtrs you can find only one trail going up on the right. Take this trail and continue walking for 30 minutes which will take you a huge house. Take the road going right from that house and keep following the ridge, in around 1 hour you would reach the top from where you can see Raksha Retreat. From there go down towards left and you will reach the road near Graphic Era University, reaching on the road take right from where Raksha Retreat would be around 2.5 Kms. Total Distance 11 Kms which would take around 4 hours but worth the trek."
